XPeng X9 The Bold Electric MPV Families Never Saw Coming

Family vehicles are changing fast, and the Xpeng X9 sits right in the middle of that shift. This Chinese carmaker first won attention with its tech-filled G6, and that G6 SUV proved the brand could build a serious car. The company even shows off flying car technology on the side, so XPeng clearly thinks big.

Now XPeng brings its second major entry to Britain. The X9 is a seven-seat, all-electric electric MPV, and you can also call it a multi-purpose vehicle. Some reviewers describe it as a luxury temple on four wheels, and the cabin earns that nickname. Customer deliveries start in Q3 2026, and the car reaches the UK market later this year.

This seven-seater wears a bold design language made of narrow head and tail lights, a sleek deep grille, and a geometric-patterned front skirt. It rolls on Rolls-Royce-inspired wheels, and inside you get zero-gravity seats and even a karaoke machine. Few family vehicles try to have this much fun, and I find that refreshing.

A Chinese firm designs this van, and Magna Steyr builds it in Graz, Austria. The premium van segment has little competition beyond the Mercedes V-Class, the VLE, the Volkswagen Multivan, and the ID. Buzz. XPeng wants to set a new benchmark for premium mobility, and the luxury feel inside backs up that goal. This people carrier may also win fans in the camping market.

Space, Seating and Interior Comfort

The roomy interior holds seven people in a 2+2+3 configuration, and the flexible seating makes daily life easier. The 2+2+3 seating layout spreads adults across three rows without much fuss. I like that the XPeng X9 treats seven passengers like real guests, not an afterthought.

The cabin feels lounge-inspired, and the middle-row seats steal the show. XPeng also adds massage to four seats across the first and second rows, so the second row gets as much love as the front.

The Zero-Gravity mode gives you near-complete reclining, and you feel like floating in space. You will enjoy it most during charging breaks, when you can lean back and relax. Honestly, that small moment sells the whole idea of this van.

The workmanship impresses for a brand that started in 2014, though reviewers spotted a few uneven seams. XPeng promises executive-style comfort, and the car mostly delivers, with premium touches everywhere.

Tall riders should know that the thigh support does not extend for people over six feet. That small flaw matters on long trips. Most other adults will not complain.

A 21.4-inch ceiling-mounted screen drops down for the five rear passengers. The 21.4in rear entertainment screen comes as standard, so nobody pays extra for it.

A small cooler of about 11 litres sits under the centre console. The third row has three seats, and adults will manage fine on shorter journeys. The short thigh support limits comfort on longer trips. Kids will love it back there.

The electronically folding third-row seats work without effort. The backrest folds onto the seat surface, and then the flush load bay floor appears. That trick turns a people carrier into a real cargo hauler in seconds.

The boot capacity runs from 721 litres up to 2,250 litres. The air suspension handles the lowering rear end, so you load luggage without a struggle. XPeng even says the boot fits a double bed or five adult bikes.

Performance, Range, Battery and Charging

The Standard Range model reaches 332 miles on the WLTP cycle, the AWD model reaches 360 miles, and the Long Range version stretches to 382 miles. That gives you an extra 50 miles over the base car, and I think most buyers will pay for it.

Chinese figures look bigger. The official Chinese tests list two battery choices, 94.8kWh and 105kWh, with 403 miles and 436 miles of range.

XPeng claims battery efficiency of 16.2kWh/100km. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 posts 14.3kWh/100km, which looks better on paper. A big people carrier will always use more energy, so the gap does not shock me.

The 800V architecture, also called 800-volt, drives the fast charging. XPeng says the car goes from 10% to 80% in 12 minutes, which makes it fastest-charging in its segment. In a laboratory test, the 106kWh battery hit 100 percent in just under 30 minutes at up to 520kW.

That result ranks among the fastest-charging cars in the world. A quick charger can add 249 miles in 13 minutes. Those numbers make road trips far less stressful.

The performance model with All-Wheel Drive sprints from 0–62 mph in 5.9 seconds. Its dual-motor powertrain makes 500bhp, and I wonder how often a family really needs that.

As an electric vehicle, the X9 also offers a sustainable choice and a smaller carbon footprint. That mix of speed, range, and safety makes the car easy to trust.

Exterior Design

The XPeng X9 looks huge and imposing, and its sleek exterior commands attention on any street. The futuristic design includes a continuous light strip at the front and rear, which ties the whole car together. The atypical van-like rear end reminds you that this is still a people carrier.

XPeng’s design language shows up in the narrow head and tail lights, the deep grille, and the geometric-patterned front skirt. Rolls-Royce-inspired wheels add a touch of class. The aerodynamic shape looks stylish, stays functional, and helps performance, so this MPV looks good and works hard. Reviewers say the exterior plays only a minor role next to the cabin, and I mostly agree.

Technology, Driver Assistance and Driving Experience

The X9 packs plenty of technology. It offers AI-assisted automated parking, adaptive city and highway driving assistance, heated seats in all seven positions, soft-close front doors, and a 21-inch touchscreen. A clever AI chassis reads road surface conditions and tunes the dual-chamber air suspension, and that technology gives the car its calm feel.

The turning circle drops to 10.8 meters, which beats many compact hatchbacks. Another source quotes 5.4m and compares it with the Smart Fortwo at 6.95m, but I treat that number with caution because the other reports disagree.

The steering wheel guides this hefty van through the city with ease. Cameras and sensors also help with parking, and the real-time adaptive suspension keeps things steady.

XPeng styled the control centre around less is more, and it looks clean. The voice assistant takes voice commands for climate control, doors, windows, the multimedia display, the massage function, the boot, and even seats. It sometimes misses a command, but it usually follows after a second try. Usability still needs work, because many functions live on the display.

The driver-assistance systems start from the right-hand stalk. On the motorway, the X9 keeps a safe distance, comes to a complete stop, helps with lane changes, and reads surrounding traffic. Reviewers noticed that it wobbles between lane markings now and then.

The adaptive cruise control feels fiddly. The left-hand steering wheel stalk adjusts it when the assistance runs, but the same stalk handles climate when the assistance sleeps. That mix confuses new drivers.

It feels harsher over transverse joints and deep manhole covers, even though a camera scans the road ahead. XPeng can still improve that part.

On the highway, the light steering feels lacking in feel. Fast corners and sudden manoeuvres cause a small rear-end lift, but the car recovers quickly.

Pricing and Availability

XPeng positions the X9 as a premium flagship, and the pricing reflects that. Officially announced UK prices are on-the-road (OTR) figures: £74,990 for the Standard Range, £79,990 for the Long Range, and £84,990 for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model. Some reviews list a starting price of £74,900 and £79,900, so I would confirm the final number with a dealer.

Order books are open, and right-hand-drive UK versions hit the road this quarter, Q3 2026. You should see the car in UK showrooms by Autumn 2026. Other reports describe the launching as later this year and promise more information in the second half of the year, so anyone curious about availability of the XPeng X9 should keep watching.

Xpeng X9 Competitors and Market Position

In the UK market, the Xpeng X9 will compete with large electric MPVs and SUVs. The Volkswagen ID Buzz, the Mercedes EQV, and the Tesla Model X sit on that list.

All those gadgets raise a fair question: will Mercedes and Volkswagen worry about losing customers? Those brands have loyal customers, so I expect a slow fight, not a quick win.

XPeng carves out a niche in the electric vehicle market by focusing on user experience and innovative technology. Magna Steyr built the X9 in Graz, Austria, and that local build adds some European credibility.
