I think of an oil change as the cheapest form of car maintenance you can buy. This guide shows you what to expect to pay and how often you should replace the oil.

Mechanics say the oil and the oil filter work as a team to lubricate moving parts and trap impurities. Most manufacturers suggest a change every 12 months or every 12,000 miles, while some advise 7,500-10,000 miles, so check your owner’s manual. Many drivers book the change with a car service, and the garage spots early signs and issues before the cost climbs.

Average Oil Change Cost

Prices in the UK vary a lot, so I always tell friends to look at the range first. FixMyCar reports an average price of £115.38, with quotes between £40 and £200. Another source puts a basic oil filter change at £90, with a range of £60 to £190. RAC Mobile Mechanics sits higher at £229, because the mobile mechanic drains the old oil, swaps the filter, and pours in new fluid at your door.

Your make and model, its age, the type of oil, and how much oil the engine holds all move the price. The garage follows the recommended oil and the manufacturer recommendations, then adds parts such as the oil filter. A dealership garage technician usually charges more than a mobile mechanic.

Location matters too. Hourly labour rates in cities and London run £50-£100, while towns and rural areas with lower demand charge £35-£50, and these labour rates shape the total cost of the job. Premium engine oils with performance-enhancing qualities tend to be more expensive. Well-known brands with a strong reputation for high-quality products also charge extra for efficiency gains.

Oil Cost Change by Manufacturer

RAC Mobile Mechanics shared each quoted price between 01/10/25 to 31/12/25, and the average cost changes with the car make. Ford costs £228, Volkswagen costs £212, BMW costs £244, and Audi and Mercedes-Benz both cost £233. Vauxhall costs £227, Land Rover costs £255, Skoda costs £202, Citroen costs £266, and SEAT costs £196.

A second source shows much lower numbers, which tells me the manufacturer matters less than the provider. Nissan, Peugeot, and Toyota cost £94, Honda and Ford cost £100, Volkswagen costs £102, Audi and Mercedes-Benz cost £114, BMW costs £120, and Land Rover costs £133.

A third source lists Audi at £117.47, BMW at £121.31, Citroen at £113.56, Ford at £114.59, and Mercedes at £122.22. MINI costs £112.01, Nissan costs £112.67, Peugeot costs £111.54, Renault costs £112.33, and Toyota costs £111.84. Vauxhall costs £113.81, Volkswagen costs £114.32, and Volvo costs £121.23, so the average price stays close for most brands.

What Is an Oil Change?

An oil change is basic vehicle upkeep where mechanic drains out worn-out oil and tops off the engine with fresh lubricant. Think of engine oil as your motor’s primary defense it lubricates active components, lowers friction, aids cooling, and protects vital vehicle parts from rust.

The longer oil stays in use, the dirtier it gets. Picture washing your dishes in the same washing-up water after every meal, and you see the problem. The oil breaks down, picks up dirt, and turns contaminated, which leaves the engine vulnerable.

A good mechanic also checks for leaks and damage. Always choose the right engine oil, because the wrong one can cause engine problems or even a damaged engine. Replacing oil costs a small price next to repairing an engine, and it helps protect your car, so follow what your manufacturer says.

How Frequently Does Your Car Need Fresh Oil?

Drivers often ask me how long they can wait. Most book an annual full-service, which covers the oil every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Some choose an interim service at 6,000 miles or six months, which gives an oil change frequency of six months to a year.

Your owner’s manual and the manufacturer recommendations set the real schedule, and many modern cars show a yellow service warning light on the dashboard when the time comes.

The type of oil matters, since conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic each last a different time. Driving conditions, mileage, and a well maintained engine change the timing too. Your make and model shifts the advice, but most cars sit between 7,000 and 10,000 miles.

Booking the change with your car service or MOT saves a second trip to the garage. You can change oil at home, but it gets messy when you start draining old oil from underneath the car. Most people simply book it.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

Your car usually warns you before real trouble starts, so learn the signs. A noisier engine with ticking, tapping, clicking, knocking, or crunching sounds tells you the metal parts grind together because lubrication has dropped. That friction causes engine damage, so take any strange noises or increased engine noise seriously.

Watch the exhaust too. Dark smoke or excess smoke, poor fuel economy, weaker fuel efficiency, decreased engine performance, and engine overheating all point to tired oil. A strong oil smell inside the vehicle is another red flag.

On the dashboard, the oil warning light, also called the engine oil light, shows an oil can symbol with a drop of oil. It often means low oil pressure, an oil leak, or dirty engine oil. Some owners mix it up with the check engine light, so read the symbol carefully.

Do a monthly check with the dipstick. Fresh oil looks yellowish or amber, while old oil turns dark brown or black, feels gritty, and carries debris and contaminants. Diesel engines run darker than petrol engines, so keep that in mind.

If the oil level is low but the colour still looks fine, a top-up with the correct engine oil works. If the oil level keeps dropping, or you have high mileage since your last oil change, book draining, replacing the filter, and refilling with new oil to lubricate the engine again.

Oil Cost Change by Location

Where you live changes the bill. In Leeds you pay about £93, in Sheffield £96, and in Birmingham £98. London, Manchester, and Liverpool all sit at £100, Newcastle hits £107, Bristol reaches £108, and Glasgow tops the list at £112, so the average cost shifts with the city.

Why Replacing Your Oil Filter Matters

A clogged oil filter lets dirty oil flow through the engine, which hurts engine performance and causes damage. The filter’s job is to hold back contaminants, so a mechanic insists on replacing the filter with every oil and filter change.

Common Engine Oil Problems

Two engine oil problems can raise your oil change cost if you ignore them, so they need quick action. Mayonnaise under the oil filler cap, a thick white substance, signals coolant contamination.

It often follows a blown head gasket or a failed air cooler, so take the car to a garage with urgent care, because a damaged head gasket can wreck an engine. In both cases, ask a mechanic to find the underlying problem.

FAQs

What is the average oil change cost in the UK?

The average price is about £115.38, with quotes ranging from £40 and £200 depending on your make and model.

How often should I change the oil in my car?

Most manufacturers suggest every 12 months or 12,000 miles, but check your owner’s manual for the exact schedule.

Why does oil change cost differ between cities and towns?

Hourly labour rates run £50-£100 in cities like London, while towns and rural areas charge £35-£50.

What signs show my car needs an oil change?

Watch for strange noises, dark smoke, poor fuel economy, a lit oil warning light, or dark brown and gritty oil on the dipstick.

Is it worth replacing the oil filter with every oil change?

Yes, because a clogged oil filter lets dirty oil circulate, so a mechanic replaces it during every oil and filter change.
