This guide walks through every major part of a car in plain English, the way I’d explain it to a friend who just bought their first vehicle. No jargon, no fluff just what each part does, what goes wrong, and whether you can fix it yourself.

Parts of a Car

Battery

My car battery is the initial energy source that fires up the engine the moment I turn the key in the ignition, and it backs up the electrical system as the back-up power source for my in-car electronics and electrical functions, even lending a hand when the alternator needs help.

When my vehicle won’t start, I grab an engine jump starter, do a quick jump start or jump-start it, and let a short journey bring the recharge; leaving the lights on is the usual cause of a flat battery, though a hidden drain, an excessive drain, a faulty battery, or a tired charging system can share the blame, so I always get it professionally tested to rule out any fault.

I keep a classic car topped up with a battery charger or conditioner on special occasions and during long periods of inactivity or lack of use to stop sulphation, since most cars and EVs need replacing every three to five years; if a battery is corroded or faulty.

I check my reg, watch a video guide, and buy the right battery, because low on charge doesn’t always mean a full replace or replacement, and topping it up before it loses capacity through infrequent use or a slow charge beats jump starting or kickstarting it every single week.

Alternator

Every car alternator I’ve swapped out reminds me how much this small part does, since it powers the electronics, the headlights, and the windscreen wipers while keeping the battery charged.

Replacing an alternator can be straightforward on older models if you have the right tools and knowledge, but on others it’s strictly a garage job, because there’s real safety risk if you’re not

confident; under the bonnet, this part turns mechanical energy from the engine’s rotation into electrical energy, sends a steady recharge to the electrical system, regulates voltage, stops overcharging, and keeps every one of your electrical components running on the consistent electrical supply it needs.

Radiator

The car radiator is one of the hardest-working parts under the hood, since it takes hot coolant from the engine, cools it, and prevents overheating across the whole cooling system.

Most radiators last around a decade, but radiator problems still creep in through leaking, rusting, or mineral deposits, so I always check the temperature gauge for a high temperature reading and glance at the ground for coolant leaking, since that issue signals real trouble for your vehicle.

while the cooling fans work alongside the radiator to dissipate heat, move airflow, hold an optimal temperature, prevent damage, and keep engine cooling running at efficient performance, so I never ignore it and just fix it early.

Spark Plug / Ignition Coil

A spark plug is a small part with a big job, since it fires the spark that starts combustion inside the engine, and it’s a core piece of the ignition system.

Over time, the electrodes wear down from wear and tear, so mechanics suggest swapping them every 30,000 miles, and if they fail before that mark, it usually points to oil leaks or another underlying issue; I replace mine myself using a torque wrench, a spark plug socket spanner, and feeler blades, disconnecting the HT leads first, checking the electrode gap, and carefully unscrewing each one.

The ignition coil sits right beside it, sending high voltage, around 30,000 volts, to every one of the spark plugs; if your car backfires or stalls, suspect a faulty ignition coil causing irregular ignition, and while it usually lasts 100,000 miles before wear and tear sets in, leaking fluids can shorten its life, so with a coil per plug setup, I simply unplug connector and remove coil unit myself, but anything else needs a qualified technician, because keeping the fuel-air mixture igniting in perfect synchrony, with the coil ready to amplify voltage for fast ignition, is what protects your engine performance, responsiveness, and fuel efficiency.

Tyres

Your tyres are made of rubber shaped into inflated rings, and they’re the only part touching the road, so sharp cornering and potholes put them through a lot every day.

Poor air pressure and poorly maintained tyres can cost you around 3% in mileage and tank efficiency, and a flat tyre or blow-out is a real risk if you skip checking for wear and tear, so always carry a spare that’s fully functioning; I’ve done changing a tyre plenty of times, and following 10 steps gets you back on the road fast, or you can enter your reg at a garage and let them fit the right set for you.

All-season tyres stay versatile across wet conditions, performance tyres boost grip and handling for sportier driving at higher speeds, off-road tyres tackle challenging terrains with rugged treads and reinforced sidewalls, run-flat tyres keep going at reduced speeds after a puncture, and touring tyres give you a smooth ride, durability, and low road noise for long-distance journeys.

Shock Absorbers

Your shock absorbers are part of the suspension, and they absorb shocks from bumps, potholes, and road defects to keep your tyres in contact with ground and give you a comfortable driving experience for you and your passengers.

If your car vibrates, clonks, or starts drifting while braking, get it checked, because this often traces back to normal wear and tear, a ruptured seal, or a leak inside the unit; repair is possible, but mechanics recommend replacing all four at once to keep the vehicle’s balance right, and only competent technicians at professional repair centres or garages should handle it, since they’re fitted in pairs for equal handling characteristics.

Working alongside them, struts sit at the front and sometimes the rear, adding structural support and dampening the impact of uneven road surfaces, so together they boost stability, driving comfort, a smoother ride, and an overall enjoyable ride, which is exactly why I leave this job to a professional.

Brakes

The brakes are the most important safety features on your car, slowing the vehicle or bringing it to a stop the moment you press the brake pedal, and a typical braking system includes a brake disc, a rotor, a brake calliper, and brake pads for every wheel, with some cars using a drum brake on the rear wheels.

Problems range from low brake fluid to a sticking brake caliper that causes pulling to one side on the road, and the most common cause is worn out brake pads, changed roughly every 25,000 miles, though harsh braking or heavy braking can shorten the life of brake pads to just 15,000 miles, meaning the brake discs may need replacing too, which is why regular servicing, your handbook, and your dealer matter so much.

I can top up brake fluid myself, but replace brake pads or a full braking system repair needs specialist skills, knowledge, equipment, and competent technicians, so I follow a guide and then hand it to the garage, because brake pads made of composite materials press against rotors, turn kinetic energy into heat, deliver controlled deceleration through their robust

design and reliable braking performance, and while brake callipers with pistons apply hydraulic pressure, clamp, and create friction for responsive braking, ignoring any safety risk here means risking your driving safety, especially once they start wearing out from uneven driving.

Catalytic Converter

Your catalytic converter, often called the cats, cleans up exhaust fumes by cutting the hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide released into the atmosphere through the exhaust pipe.

It usually lasts up to 10 years, but it can become contaminated, clogged, or overheated because of faults in the engine management system, which will restrict flow of gases, hurt engine efficiency, and cause sluggish performance or even a breakdown; most cars flash a warning light on the dashboard thanks to on-board diagnostic systems, so keep checking and

get it looked at by a professional repair garage or dealer before engine performance gets severely diminished, especially since emissions are tested during the MOT process and will fail if they’re below the minimum requirements. If it’s damaged or faulty, you can’t repair a catalytic converter yourself it needs full replacement.

Clutch

In cars with a manual transmission, the clutch connects the engine and transmission so the gears shift smoothly, while an automatic transmission uses a different mechanism entirely.

Watch for slipping, which causes a momentary loss of acceleration, along with squealing, difficulty selecting gear, trouble changing gear, or a clutch pedal that feels floppy or stiff; the only thing I can fix myself is topping up the clutch fluid reservoir on a hydraulic clutch, since anything more is a specialised repair best left to a reliable garage. The torque converter plays a similar role in the world of gears and transmission, because in manual transmissions the clutch

helps you engage and disengage gears with precise control, while in automatic transmissions the torque converter smoothly transfers power so gears shift seamlessly, keeping your drive both smooth and dynamic.

Gearbox

The gearbox, also called the transmission, sends power from the engine through sets of gears to the road wheels, and most gearbox faults come down to normal wear in the mechanisms or, in automatics, a problem with the transmission fluid.

Running low on fluid or a leak can cause a clogged transmission line, and since DIY repairs are almost impossible here, regular servicing is the real fix; I always take my motor to a garage or call a mobile mechanic rather than guess.

Manual gearboxes give you driver control through the engagement and disengagement of gears using the clutch, letting you react to driving conditions like road slipperiness, acceleration, and deceleration, while automatic gearboxes handle shifting gears smoothly without you touching a gear stick, thanks to a torque converter acting as a fluid coupling;

CVTs, or continuously variable transmissions, use pulleys and belts for an infinite range of gear settings and seamless acceleration, boosting fuel efficiency and adapting to dynamic driving conditions as a genuinely high-performance choice,

While the differential and driveshaft form the rest of the power system, sending drive to the wheels for smooth turns and one harmonious system of motion.

Water Pump

My car water pump is part of the engine cooling system, and it circulates coolant around the engine, absorbs heat, sends it to the radiator, and dissipates heat to hold the optimum temperature and prevent overheating.

Whether mechanical or electrical, these pumps are prone to failure on higher mileage vehicles, with leaks from failed seals, cracks, or bearing failure as the usual culprits, meaning you’ll need a new pump and a fresh tank of coolant to get moving again.

Replacing a water pump is rarely a straightforward task, since special tools are often required, so I leave this one to professionals or a mobile mechanic, while hoses and other cooling systems work alongside it, regulating temperature and absorbing heat so coolant can move around freely.

Distributor

The car distributor sends high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs exactly when needed, and it’s a key piece of the ignition process, though many modern cars don’t use distributors anymore.

General wear and a build-up of dirt or engine sludge inside the distributor cap are the most common faults, so I make it a habit to clean regularly.

Sometimes only the distributor cap needs fixing, and that’s easily done, but mechanics usually recommend changing distributor cap and rotor at the same time, regardless of condition.

Thermostat

The car thermostat works to regulate temperature inside the engine, controlling the flow of coolant so it can warm up faster or cool down if things start overheating.

There are really only two ways a thermostat fails: it gets stuck in open position or stuck in closed position, and you’ll notice the second one fast, because the temperature gauge shoots into the red within minutes of driving.

Whatever’s wrong, I replace it right away, even if the initial inspection doesn’t look too bad, since a faulty thermostat is never worth the risk.

Air Filter (Engine)

Your engine air filter keeps out debris and dirt, and it’s different from the cabin air filter, which blocks dust and pollen from entering through the A/C and heat vents.

Over time it gets clogged with dust and dirt, and the tell-tale signs include reduced fuel economy, unusual engine sounds, and black smoke from the exhaust pipe, with most filters lasting 30,000 miles or three years, sooner in heavy traffic.

I always fix this one myself: locate filter, usually inside a black box under the bonnet, remove it, note how it sits, insert replacement, fasten box, and check the vehicle handbook to get the right part.

Spare Tyre

Tucked in the boot, your spare tyre is either full-size or a compact Space Saver wheel and tyre kept ready in case one goes flat or burst, giving you an immediate replacement on the spot.

If you’re using a compact spare, most manufacturers limit you to limited distances and 50mph, since it’s not built for prolonged use, so replace it as soon as you can to avoid another flat or blow out on the road. Fixing a spare tyre myself simply means taking the spare wheel to a local tyre dealer or local garage for a replacement spare tyre, and they’ll happily supply and fit it for you.

Air Conditioning Compressor

The air conditioning compressor is part of the air-conditioning system, compressing coolant before it reaches the condenser and helping cool cabin air on hot days.

If your A/C system has issues, it’s usually a leak, but if there isn’t one, the compressor not working could mean a broken seal or failing mechanism, and either way you’ll likely need a whole new compressor unit.

Most air-con compressor units last the lifetime of a car, but they’re genuinely tricky to fix, so I always send this job to a professional at a garage.

Cylinder Block and Pistons

The engine’s cylinder block gives your engine its solid structure and acts as the powerhouse’s foundation, holding individual cylinders, which are simply hollow tubes where controlled combustions happen.

Inside them, piston rings hold the pistons snug against the cylinders, letting them move up and down to turn explosive energy from combustion into real driving force.

This up-and-down movements pattern, or piston-cylinder interaction, is the primary component propelling your vehicle forward and generating automotive power.

Crankshaft and Camshaft

At the heart of the engine’s inner workings, the crankshaft turns the vertical motion of the pistons into rotational energy, giving your vehicle its driving force.

At the same time, the camshaft manages precise timing for every valve openings event, keeping combustion running through seamless combustion.

Together they synchronise every one of these internal combustion events with accurate movements, producing a smooth motion and propulsive motion for your car.

Intake and Exhaust Manifolds

Think of these two parts as the lungs of a car, managing the air flow your engine needs to breathe.

The intake manifold draws in oxygen for combustion, while the exhaust manifold pushes out spent gases through the exhaust, and together they keep your internal combustion engine running at its best performance.

This harmonious balance of power and efficiency doesn’t apply to electric vehicles, since they simply don’t need these parts at all.

Fuel Injection System

Modern engines rely on the fuel injection system for optimal combustion, with fuel injectors delivering fuel straight into the engine cylinders for better efficiency and power. This setup replaced old carburettors, which were famous for clogging and general wear and tear.

Fuel injectors give you improved fuel distribution, improved performance, and reduced emissions compared to that older system.

Throttle Body and Air Intake System

The throttle body and air intake system work as a team to control the airflow heading into your engine. The throttle manages the quantity of air coming in, while the intake system keeps a clean air supply and efficient air supply flowing at all times. Together, they handle the engine’s breathing, which is essential for peak power, fuel efficiency, and overall performance.

EV Battery Cooler System

Electric vehicles use a different cooling system built specifically for the battery and the electric motor. The battery cooler works much like a traditional radiator, since it dissipates heat from the battery coolant while extra airflow clears out the excess heat. Holding an optimal temperature here is vital for the longevity and efficiency of EVs.

Oil Pump and Oil Filter

The oil pump circulates engine oil around vital components, keeping everything well-lubricated for smooth operation. At the same time, the oil filter removes impurities before they can damage anything sensitive. Between the two, they protect engine health and stretch out the engine’s longevity for years to come.

Starter Motor and Solenoid

The starter motor and solenoid work as a pair to get your engine running. The solenoid activates starter motor action, which then turns engine over to kickstart combustion process inside the cylinders. It’s a genuinely coordinated effort that turns electrical energy straight into mechanical motion.

Wiring Harness and Fuses

The wiring harness carries electricity to every corner of your vehicle, connecting all the components that need power. Fuses sit in key spots to guard against electrical overloads, cutting power before things go wrong. Together, they keep a safe flow, an organised flow of electrical power, stop malfunctions, and protect the entire electrical network.

Control Arms and Bushings

Inside the chassis, the control arms and bushings give your car real stability and smooth handling. Control arms connect the suspension to the frame, while bushings add flexibility where it’s needed most. This pair soaks up road imperfections, keeps your tyre alignment correct, and delivers a balanced ride.

Power Steering Pump and Rack

The power steering pump and rack are the two parts behind responsive steering. The pump builds hydraulic pressure, and the rack turns that into controlled motion, making effortless steering possible. Together, they give you precise manoeuvrability and smooth manoeuvrability for easy navigation on the road.

Muffler and Resonator

The muffler and resonator work together as part of your exhaust system to control noise levels. The muffler’s job is to reduce noise, while the resonator fine-tunes sound frequencies to shape the exhaust notes.

Oxygen Sensors

Oxygen sensors track oxygen levels inside the exhaust gases, feeding that data straight to the engine control unit. This information allows for precise fuel injection, which keeps combustion efficiency high. In turn, that means reducing emissions every time you drive.

Seats & Their Belts

Your seats are built for both comfort and support, and they come in different materials and configurations depending on the car. Seat belts are just as important for safety, securing every one of your occupants during travel. Many now include pretensioners and force limiters for extra protection in a crash.

Dashboard & Steering Functions

The dashboard acts as a visual command centre, showing your speed, fuel levels, and engine status at a glance. It gives you full driver awareness the moment you sit down. Paired with the steering wheel, which brings power-assisted features and controls for indicators, wipers, and multimedia systems, you stay fully in command of the drive.

The features and controls on your doors add real convenience and safety for every one of the drivers. Expect electric window controls, door locks, and mirror adjustments as standard on almost any car. Some models go further with keyless entry and power-operated doors, giving you a streamlined, user-friendly driving experience.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
