How Can I Work Out The Type Of Walls I Have?

Working out the type of walls you have starts with a simple look outside. If your brickwork sits visible on the outside, study the pattern the bricks make, because a hollow wall usually shows an even pattern with every brick laid lengthways, while a solid wall shows an alternating pattern, with some bricks turned so you spot their smaller ends from outside.

When the walls are covered with render, cladding, or timber cladding, you cannot read the brick pattern, so it pays to call in a buildings professional for proper advice. You can also check the width, measuring the wall thickness from an open door or window, from the inside edge right through to the outside.

Stone walls stay solid no matter their depth, even reaching 500mm, and earth walls can run from 300mm to well over a metre, yet they still count as solid. Some properties use a completely different building type, like a steel-frame or timber-framed building, or one built from prefabricated concrete. If your home has a timber frame, you can usually spot it somewhere on show, though it might also hide behind cladding or a newer facing.

This route counts as the fastest and most cost effective answer, though repairs can turn expensive once the damage spreads further into the building. This kind of wall tie replacement protects your walls for decades to come.

To stop this happening again, modern ties come from corrosion-resistant and fire-resistant materials such as stainless steel, complete with a drip formation that keeps water away from the inner leaf a small design tweak that protects the whole structure for years.

The cost of installing hollow wall insulation depends mostly on the size of your home, though most people earn that money back within five years through lower energy bills.

Once every hole holds enough material, the team fills holes back up in the brickwork using a matching filler material. If that colour doesn’t quite match the outside wall or render, you might still notice the old drill holes, but a quick coat of paint covers them right up.
